The Scenario
- You have domain forwarding set up (vanity domains)
- Or, you have sub-domains
- Or, you have different domains for different parts of your site
- Or, all of the above…
…and they’re really all just part of the same site.
You have the same GA code on all the pages, but GA considers each domain and sub-domain a different site.
The Problem
Traffic moving from one sub-domain or domain to another sub-domain or domain is considered “referring” traffic, and you want to know where the traffic is really coming from.
The Solution
Configure GA using Cross-Domain Tracking. The Google Team put together great documentation on Google Analytics Cross-Domain Tracking. Check it out for the technical implementations. If you’re fortunate enough to have a IT/web dev guy, forward this link on to him.
Note: There’s a custom setting you need to make in the profile itself. Be sure to follow the directions in the Site Linking Considerations portion of the help doc.
