I’ve been noticing wifi connectivity problems on my Surface Pro 3. I can successfully connect to routers, but I see LIMITED underneath the wifi name instead of CONNECTED on particular access points and I can’t load websites. I believe it happened after one of the automatic Windows Updates because I was able to connect to all these routers before, and then all of a sudden I’ve been seeing LIMITED on particular routers regularly.
I telecommute so I work from different locations (home, telecommuter lounge, cafes, church), so I didn’t notice it right away. I just assumed that it was a router issue at certain locations. But then I began to notice that everyone else around me (both PC and Mac users) seemed to be able to connect to the routers except me. In one instance, we were at church working on a project and there were about 40 devices connected to the church’s wifi router and getting Internet access, including my iPhone. The only devices that were connected to the router but couldn’t get Internet were the two Surface Pro 3’s in the room. There is something definitely wrong with the wifi on the Surface Pro 3. If you do a search, you’ll see an increasing number of people complaining about this issue.
I tried various things: disconnecting and reconnecting to the wifi, rebooting, disabling and re-enabling the wifi adapter, uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. The only thing I haven’t tried was reverting to a previous state.
I spent about an hour with Microsoft’s Surface Pro support team, and the advice they gave me was to update the firmware of the routers. I explained that was unreasonable given that the problem was often not at places where I can access the firmware of the routers (i.e., cafes).
The temporary solution to hold me over is using the USB wifi adapter (Panda Ultra Wireless N USB Adapter – 150Mbps) which I purchased from Amazon for $12. At the very least I am able to connect to our church’s wifi now. I haven’t tested it in the other locations where I previously had problems, but this seems to work. The one painful thing, other than the additional cost, is that it uses up a USB port and the Surface Pro 3 comes with only 1 port. 🙁 If you don’t have a USB hub, then you’re out of luck if you want to use a Logitech wireless device or a USB drive while being online.
